About this ceremony

Sacred Mantra

ॐ

“Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam · Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat”

What it feels like

There is a moment when the whole gathering chants 'Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat' — 'free me from death into immortality' — and the fire leaps higher. For anyone who has known fear or illness, it is the sound of hope itself: ancient, unhurried and unbreakable.

What happens inside the Mrityunjaya Homa

Performed in the authentic VDS Vaidic paddhati — Sankalpa, Ganapati Puja, Kalasha Sthapana, Punyahavachanam, the consecration of Agni, the deity's offerings, and the final Purnahuti.

  1. 1

    Sankalpa & Ganapati Puja

Intention is set for health and protection; Ganapati is invoked for an obstacle-free ceremony.

  2. 2

    Kalasha Sthapana

A sacred water pot is consecrated, invoking the healing presence of Shiva and the divine mothers.

  3. 3

    Maha Mrityunjaya Japa

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra ('Tryambakam yajamahe…') is chanted a sankalpic number of times for its powerful healing vibration.

  4. 4

    Homa offerings

Ghee, durva, bilva and herbs are offered into Agni with each repetition of the mantra, transmitting its protective energy.

  5. 5

    Abhishekam & Purnahuti

Sacred abhishekam to the Shivalinga and the final offering complete the homa; vibhuti is given as prasad.

Significance

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is revered as the 'life-restoring' mantra of the Vedas. Performed as a homa, its vibration is amplified through Agni, surrounding the person with a protective shield. It is sought during serious illness, before surgery, or to dispel a sense of fear and heaviness.

  • ✦Protects from accidents and untimely fear
  • ✦Bestows courage, peace and longevity
